When should this come to mind?

A sequence gives every value an index. First decide what information a single pass can maintain.

What makes it work

Index access is constant time; scans are linear. Preserve order unless the problem permits sorting.

When to choose something else

Frequent insertions in the middle may need a linked or tree structure.
